Young people in their teens and adolescent years are expected to be healthy. However, due to their growing fondness for junk foods and their inactive lifestyles, health problems can start to manifest at a young age. In addition to these, kids of this age start to develop feelings of insecurity that also affects their emotional health. It is important for parents to be observant of the health woes teenagers face to help them become better, physically and emotionally.

Acne

Everyone had this in their teenage years that adult see this as a normal occurrence, something that you should not fret about. For teens, however, having acne is devastating. It affects their self-esteem, making them avoid crowds and parties because they feel bad about not looking good. If left untreated, acne can also leave deep scars that teens will have to endure until their adult years. As parents, take some time to check on your child's acne. If he gets only one or two, then you can easily find a topical treatment from your local drugstore to help your child cure those zits. If your child is having major breakouts, it is best that you bring him to the dermatologist to put the acne under control. The doctor may prescribe some antibiotics and put your child into a strict skin care routine using acne-fighting products.

Obesity

This is a major problem in the US now. There is a rising case of obesity among teenagers, which makes them at risk to developing diabetes, hypertension, joint problems, and asthma. Aside from these, obese teens are also prone to being ridiculed and teased by their classmates. Being bullied is one thing any teenagers want to avoid, but being the fattest in their class make them easy targets. The humiliation is sometimes too much for them to take, which drive some of them to do unthinkable things, like quitting school or harming themselves.

Obesity is caused by the unhealthy lifestyle of kids nowadays, so the only way parents can help their kids is by changing their lifestyle. Avoid eating at fast food restaurants. Take time to prepare healthy meals for your kids and pack a healthy lunch for them too. Spend your weekends on doing physical activities that are fun and exhilarating. For instance, you can bring the whole family to the beach where you can swim all day, play volleyball, and jog by the shore. Another good idea is to register the whole family in a local sports club. The more active lifestyle will help keep everyone fit and it could also strengthen the family's bond.

Stress

When kids reach their teens, their responsibilities will start to increase. Parents and teachers expect them to excel in school. Friends can start to demand more of their time and attention. This is also the start of the dating years, when they feel that they have to continually try to impress people of the opposite sex. If there are problems at home, this could also add to the stress a teen is facing. All of these may be too much to handle for a teenager, which is why parents should show extra support and understanding. Try to communicate with your child and discuss issues that he is facing. Sometimes being able to open up is enough to appease the stress and tension that they are undergoing.
